TXM Lean Minute – Engage your People in Value Stream Mapping
Value Stream Mapping is a great tool for understanding your business.. Building a value stream map based on superficial or incorrect information not only will lead to a poor result, it also fails to show respect to the people who do the work. In this Lean Minute, TXM Consulting Director, Anthony Clyne explains why it is important to engage your people in developing a value stream map.

RESPECTING the people, and FOCUSING on the detail ENGAGES Employees while Value Stream Mapping.
Hi, I’m Anthony Clyne. Welcome to this TXM Lean Minute.
Value Stream Mapping engages employees. The style and passion of the facilitator coupled with a consistent process ensures the employees keep engaged.
The challenge when value stream mapping is to ensure the big picture improvement is achieved while fixing up many micro improvements.
Often the Value Stream Maps will miss the detail.
Missing detail is disrespectful to the people doing the work. Identifying the many frustrations and is part of the value stream outcome.
At TXM we use the proven Manufacturing Agility Process to Value Stream Map. Our facilitators check understanding and role play the conversations to demonstrate what really happens in the work place. The facilitators then identify boundary conditions and role play the ideal situation as the current state is unravelling. This method allows micro behaviours to be defined immediately and further engages the people to participate in the future state mapping process.
Next time you have a need to value stream map
1) Respect each individual need at every step, and
2) Focus on the detail
The results you should expect is a future state plan that is easier to implement, and a greater engagement from both the people in the value stream mapping workshop, and the people they represent.
Try this next time you value stream map.
Thank you for watching this TXM Lean Minute.
